12 Wineries & Wines That Innately Celebrate the Essence of Mother’s Day

If Mother’s Day plans include a celebratory toast, why not make that toast with a wine that naturally celebrates the occasion? The dozen of wines listed here celebrate matriarchal figures or are created by mothers. This means that every wine is a more than suitable addition to your own homage to Mother’s Day.

The heart of Wines from the Hamel family is a family – one with a shared passion for making quality wines that are a reflection of their unique wineries and their management of the country. Hamel is run by the brothers George III and John and is known for Cabernet Sauvignon. Your most prestigious bottling, the 2016 Pamelita Reserve (Picture above, middle) was affectionately named after her mother Pamela Hamel, which makes this wine an ideal Mothers Day pouring. This plush pig presents itself with intense aromas of dark fruits, lavender, crushed stones and spices. The soft tannins provide a seamless and lingering finish on the palette made from the balanced and balanced grapes of Nuns Canyon Vineyard and Hamel Family Ranch, two of the winery’s most respected vineyards.

In 2007, Debra Mathy became the first single woman to own a winery in Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley. This began her course to empower and lead the next generation of women. Owner of Dutcher Crossing Mathy Winery was inspired by their mother and father to believe that hard work, ethics, and confidence – not gender – determine a person’s ability to get a job done. Dutcher Crossing produces more than 30 handcrafted small wines from the counties of Sonoma, Mendocino and Napa. The Kupferschmid red wine from the winemakers 2015 from the Dry Creek Valley is named after Mathy’s mother Leah, whose maiden name is Kupferschmid and for whom a Rhône mixed block inspired by Chateauneuf de Pape was planted. “Every time my mother visits the winery, she insists that the visitors try ‘their’ wine,” laughs Mathy.

As one of the first female winery owners in the country, Damaris Deere Ford focused solely on making great Chardonnay. Almost 50 years after Sonoma County’s inception Landmark vineyardsFord, the great-great-granddaughter of John Deere, continues to run the winery through his Damaris Chardonnay. Her family’s agricultural heritage is kept alive and thriving by Landmark’s beautiful, fertile vineyards. Like every revered “mother”, she remains the inspiration and strongest advocate of Landmark. The Damaris Chardonnay 2018 shows the best character of the Sonoma Chardonnay in terms of intensity and complexity. Lemon colored with flavors of ripe lemon, baked yellow apple, crispy pear, custard, butterscotch with herbal notes, serve this nut with grilled swordfish and lemon and basil butter sauce.

Sonoma County native, mother of three, Gianna Kelly began her wine education while she was sitting with her father as he was creating the wine list at her family restaurant. A college chemistry degree was employed in the wine industry as a chemist for Enologix before joining Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars as an oenologist. It was then that she fell in love with Bordeaux varieties and then honed her viticulture skills. In 2018 Kelly joined the Cardinale team as a winemaker assistant, and in 2019 she became chief winemaker for Wine gallery, known for distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc wines from the Napa Valley and the Knights Valley. Bum Ash Wine Cellar

The winemaker and mother Kate Ayres develops uniquely expressive Pinot Noir styles for the Bum Ash Wine Cellar is known in the Willamette Valley and around the world. Ayres grew up on the north Oregon coast and gained her experience working in vineyards around the world after studying viticulture and oenology at UC Davis. She spent five years at Hess Collection Winery as an Associate Winemaker before returning to the Pacific Northwest to work and study alongside the incomparable Lynn Penner-Ash at her homonymous winery. Kate enjoys her time outside the winery and explores the wilderness of her youth with her son Nico, her husband and fellow winemaker Hans and the black Labrador Kima. The mother / daughter duo behind this lovely wine brand makes this an obvious Mother’s Day gift choice. The owner Rickey Trombetta and her daughter, the winemaker Erica Stancliff, join forces with them small family winery located in the cool Petaluma Gap Sub-AVA climate of the coveted Sonoma Coast AVA. They take great pride in producing lovely little Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varieties that reflect the Petaluma Gap, Sonoma and Russian River terroirs from which they come. The beautiful gardens in the Napa Valley are celebrated Cake bread cellar are a tribute to their architect Dolores Cakebread, whose two sons Dennis and Bruce continue to run the legendary winery, which was founded almost 50 years ago by their mother and father, Jack. Known for its collaborative approach, Diogo-Draper owes its professional success to a passion for agriculture and winemaking that was nurtured from an early age. The Artesa Los Carneros Chardonnay shows great freshness, intensity and elegance. Based in Argentina Graffito celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. The winery is run by his wife and mother Jimena Lopez, who, in addition to her passion for wine, also devotes herself to her girls Julieta and Valentina. Both experienced their first harvests in the winery at a very young age. They worked in the basement and laboratory, and took naps in the tasting room. Amalia and Julio Palmaz, the Buenos Aires born co-founders and co-chairs of exceptional Palmaz vineyards, combine tradition with technology in their Napa winery. Amalia was the instigator and continues to be the inspiration for the brand’s beauty Amalia Chardonnay.
