Past fantasy prospects
Mayfield, the number 1 on last year’s draft, debuted in week 3 and took the starting job the following week. His big break came when the Browns fired offensive coordinator Todd Haley in Week 9 and replaced him with running backs coach Freddie Kitchens. In six games under Haley, Mayfield completed 58.3 percent of his passes with 6.6 YPA and eight touchdowns. In eight games among kitchens, those numbers rose to 68.4 percent, 8.6 YPA and 19 TDs, triggered by success in throwing the deep ball. In weeks 9-17, Mayfield scored a TD percentage of 14.7 (2nd), 17.8 YPA (3rd), and a passerby rating of 108.5 (6th) on attempts longer than 20 meters. . For the season, his average target depth of 9.4 meters took fifth place in the league. The off-season addition of Odell Beckham Jr. could take Mayfield and the Cleveland offense to the next level this year under Kitchens, now the head coach but still the game caller. Former Buccaneers assistant Todd Monken is the new offensive coordinator. Jarvis Landry returns to occupy the slot. They also signed Carlos Hyde and designed Nick Chubb to join Duke Johnson in the backfield. Better still, the offense now belongs to coordinator Todd Haley, who has held the same role in Pittsburgh for the past six years. Jackson will no longer be calling games, and that benefits everyone who is at the forefront.
