Bayern Munich 2-3 Paris St-Germain: Kylian Mbappe scores twice as PSG win thriller

Kylian Mbappe has scored eight Champions League goals this season

Kylian Mbappe scored two goals when Paris St-Germain showed an excellent away performance in the exciting quarter-finals of the Champions League against defending champions Bayern Munich.

This was a meeting between last year’s finalists and both made for an extremely fun game that would have been worth the final of the competition.

It only took Mbappe three minutes to make a name for himself when fed by Neymar and the striker slapped a ride through Manuel Neuer’s legs.

Marquinhos doubled the lead for the French champions in the middle of the first half with a neat finish after a great ball from Neymar before ex-PSG striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting went home to cut the deficit in half.

Neuer made up for his earlier mistake by denying Neymar from close range early in the second half before Keylor Navas at the other end blocked David Alaba and Benjamin Pavard’s goals.

But Bayern Munich kept up the pressure and rightly scored on the hour when Thomas Müller shot a header into the goal after Joshua Kimmich’s free kick.

Mbappe had the final say, however, when he shot a low strike through Jerome Boateng’s legs late to give PSG a third crucial away goal for the second leg.

Another big win for Pochettino’s PSG

For Mauricio Pochettino, it was another notable result in Europe after beating Barcelona 4-1 in the first leg of the round of 16.

That win was all the more impressive given that it took place at Nou Camp and PSG once again went to the home of a European giant for a shock result.

Against a team that hadn’t lost any of their last 19 Champions League games – with 18 of those wins – the visitors put on a tactically brilliant performance as they withstood Bayern’s relentless attacks before taking advantage of the pace of Neymar and Mbappe choosing them during the break.

PSG were undoubtedly helped by Robert Lewandowski’s absence at Bayern as the hosts had 31 chances to score. That shouldn’t detract from an outstanding performance from Pochettino’s side, who are preparing things well when the two teams meet in Paris on Tuesday April 13th (8:00 p.m. CET).
