With that in mind, Benzema was only the fifth player to score 20 or more goals in the knockout stage of the competition and join Cristiano Ronaldo (67 goals), Lionel Messi (49), Robert Lewandowski (26) and Thomas Müller (24).

Benzema’s overall winner in the Champions League scored 71 goals, just like Real legend Raul in the overall standings – only Ronaldo (134), Messi (120) and Lewandowski (73) scored more goals in the competition. However, unlike the players above him, all of Benzema’s goals emerged from the open game.

He has also managed to score more goals in the Champions League (15) than former attacking partner Ronaldo (14) since he left Real to join Juventus in the summer of 2018 after the couple won the fourth Champions League together.

Also by his standards, Benzema has achieved rich form in recent weeks, having scored 15 direct goals in his last 14 appearances for Real in all competitions (13 goals and two assists). As if to demonstrate his efficiency in front of goal, Benzema scored with Madrid’s only shot on goal all night against Chelsea. This purple stain has not gone unnoticed by his manager Coach Zinedine Zidane praises his compatriot after the Chelsea game with the words:

“Karim is amazing and I’m happy for him, but I’m not surprised what he does in every game.”

Madrid-based newspaper AS also praised the striker’s influence on the second leg. to declare “Benzema is the hope!” on their front page. They went a step further on Instagram and posted a recreated picture of him Hold the Ballon d’Or and ask the question: “Has Karim’s year come?”

It seems that belief is not out of place as Benzema has proven to be incredibly effective when it comes to the business end of major European knockout tournaments. Again, only Ronaldo (13 goals), Lewandowski (7) and Messi (6) have scored more goals than the former in semi-finals of the Champions League Lyon forward (5).

At 33 and 129 days, Benzema is now also the oldest Real Madrid player to ever score at this stage of the competition, proving that as the years progressed, his skills have not yet entirely diminished.

Chelsea are also the 33rd other team Benzema has faced in his 16 Champions League seasons – another position he shares with Raul. The duo is in third place overall. No prizes for guessing which two players will occupy the first and second rung: Messi scored against 36 teams, Ronaldo 35.

Benzema’s record is six goals in nine Champions League games this season, with 28 goals in all competitions, while his total since signing to Real Madrid in 2009 is 277 goals and 142 assists in 553 games.

In any other era he would be considered a Titan and yet he is underrated by the majority. Who knows, knows.
