Biden set to deliver first address before joint session of Congress

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden will deliver his first address at a joint congressional session on Wednesday, April 28, shortly before his 100th day in office.

Biden accepted an invitation from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to hold a joint meeting that day on Tuesday evening, the White House confirmed.

The speech will allow Biden to make progress in his first 100 days, a historic benchmark for the presidency. A time for Biden’s speech was not announced.

In a short letter to the President, Pelosi asked Biden to “share your vision to address the challenges and opportunities of this historic moment”.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki previously indicated that Biden’s first joint session address – which meets a constitutional requirement – may look different from previous speeches due to precautionary measures during the coronavirus pandemic.

All senators and members of the House of Representatives of both parties, as well as justices of the Supreme Court, usually pack the House of Representatives Chamber for the State of the Union and the speeches of the President of the joint session. It is unclear what steps could be taken.

Biden’s first presidential address to Congress will be much later on the calendar than previous presidents, including Donald Trump and Barack Obama, who both spoke to Congress for the first time in February.

Biden’s tenure as president began with heightened security in the Capitol following the January 6 attack on the Capitol and coincided with the impeachment process of Trump in the Senate. Democrats in Congress worked for the next few weeks to pass Biden’s COVID-19 relief bill.

Since it was passed, Biden has tabled a $ 2.25 trillion job and infrastructure proposal called the American Jobs Plan, which Congress is expected to take up in the coming weeks.
