Biden’s Strange New ‘Bipartisanship’ – WSJ

President Biden advocated unity and non-partisanship, but his governance philosophy was the opposite. Now the White House is redefining the concept.

“If you were to search for ‘non-partisan’ in the dictionary, I think it would mean the support of Republicans and Democrats,” said Anita Dunn, a senior White House adviser, recently. “It doesn’t mean Republicans have to be in Congress.”

To take Mr. Biden’s $ 1.9 trillion Covid buying frenzy off, the thesis seems to be that when polls say it’s popular, it’s “non-partisan” even though zero Republicans voted for it. That is certainly a new way of looking at things.

Mr Biden also made an appearance last week by rewriting the story of how he handled his partisan bill. On February 1, before the bill went through, 10 GOP senators (enough to break a filibuster) visited Mr. Biden at the White House with a counteroffer of $ 600 billion. A day later, the Democrats in Congress began pushing through their $ 1.9 trillion budget resolution so they could get Mr Biden’s plan passed on a grand scale. The Republican offer was immediately rejected.

“I would have been willing to compromise,” said Mr Biden last week, “but they didn’t.” They didn’t move an inch. Not an inch. ”
