Receiving fifth year in Atlanta

May 3, 2021

ANALYSIS
Atlanta probably didn’t have to worry about extending Ridley’s rookie contract to a fifth year after emerging as one of the NFL’s top wideouts in 2020. After two promising campaigns to begin his career, Ridley was last catapulted to Star Season honoring second-team all-pro after collecting 90 receptions for 1,374 yards and nine touchdowns. Ridley and Julio Jones will stay in any order as options # 1 and # 2 in a strong passing game in Atlanta, bolstered by the addition of # 4 overall this off-season Kyle Pittswho is widely regarded as one of the top pass-catching tight-end draft prospects in recent times.

Past fantasy prospects

Named the 26th overall win last year, Ridley had a promising rookie season with 10 points (T-6), 8.9 YPT, and four catches of over 40 yards on just 92 targets. Usually, that kind of debut in Year 2 would mean big things. But six of Ridley’s TDs came in weeks 2 through 4 – he only had four points from week 5 through the end of the year. Additionally, Ridley’s focus was at times suspicious as he dropped nine passes, nearly 10 percent of his overall appearance. Eventually Julio Jones, once challenged in the red zone, suffered a TD goal in the second half and Jones is going nowhere as he is the team’s target and looks near the goal line first. At 6-1,190, Ridley is average height and speed (4.43 40). He is a sophisticated route runner and versatile enough to be set up outside or in the slot. And while Jones’ presence limits his goal and production cap, there’s a nice floor with a stable QB situation, humble contributions from TE in the passing game, and just 30-year-old Mohamed Sanu battling for the non-Jones portion of the wideout Opportunities.

With the 26th overall victory, Ridley is at an almost ideal landing spot. The Hawks have a high-end QB in its heyday and a gap in the game against an aging Julio Jones at the receiver. Mohamed Sanu is a decent possession option, but he’s slow and only had one 40 yard catch in the past two years. Enter Ridley, a polished route runner and savvy college receiver who runs a 4.43 40 and has enough speed to line up in the slot. At 6-1,190, Ridley isn’t particularly strong and he’s already 23 so his cap may not be as high as some of the younger players in his class. But he should see goals out of the gate and has a good chance of being number 2 on the team soon.
