Carson is the perfect return for the Seahawks in many ways. Seattle’s much-maligned offensive line improved last year in blocking runs with the addition of security guard DJ Fluker and new position coach Mike Solari, but it was still handy to have a head start that would rather run through people than develop holes waiting. The Oklahoma-based product led the 2018 NFL in broken tackles (39 ahead of Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry), and while that running style makes Carson more prone to injury, results were impressive last year when he grabbed Game No. 1 job in week 3. He finished the first 1000-yard season in Seattle since Marshawn Lynch in 2014 and, with the help of new offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, revived a dying assault. Carson has no outstanding qualities other than power, however, and a lack of pass-catching skills limits his general advantage. Rashaad Penny, the 27th overall winner on last year’s draft, will be looking for more touches this season, but the duo have a lot in common when it comes to skill levels so a traditional timeshare won’t necessarily develop for runners and recipients. More likely, coach Pete Carroll is letting his running backs fight for carry, which could result in solid season totals for both of them when it comes to the league’s toughest offensive, but frustration for fantasy owners when it comes to guessing which player is ahead of the game given week.
Carson, who took the seventh round out of the state of Oklahoma last year, won the starting job in the Seahawks’ backfield at training camp and put together a solid four-week run before breaking his leg and ending his season. It’s easy to see what the coaches liked about the rookie, as he runs one-on-one behind a 5-11, 218-pound frame and seems to welcome contact without hesitation. The downside is he doesn’t miss many defenders, and an injury history dating back to his junior year in college suggests he may not be able to withstand the throbbing that his running style attracts. Carson doesn’t offer much in temporary situations either, limiting his role mostly to early downs and short yardage spots. The selection of Rashaad Penny in the first round leaves Carson at a difficult point, despite the fact that the professional opened a training camp in the second year with the starting offense. With Penny insecure for Week 1 while recovering from a broken finger, Carson is well on his way to kicking off the season as Seattle rolls back. Of course, the struggle for the stretcher can only just begin.
It looks like the Seahawks will pick a running back of the committee in 2017 with Eddie Lacy, Thomas Rawls, and CJ Prosise, all capable of running the indictment. Additionally, Seattle has a handful of young players battling for limited squad spots, and Carson, a round seven selection, will have to stand out from the crowd if he is to stay on the roster in September. While not recording major stats in the state of Oklahoma, the 22-year-old put in an admirable performance during the combine, running a 4.58-second 40 while scoring a 37-inch vertical jump and a 130-inch long jump. However, don’t expect to see main agent in 2017.
