How do Chris Godwin’s readings compare to other broadband receivers?
This section compares his draft training metrics with players in the same position. The bar represents the player’s percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway through, then the player falls within the 50th percentile for that metric and is considered average.
Few players have had a better off-season than Godwin – at least in terms of their fantasy prospects. Both DeSean Jackson (74 targets) and Adam Humphries (105) have disappeared, only to be replaced by Breshad Perriman, a 2015 athletic first-round winner who has never really made his way in the league. Additionally, GM Jason Licht compared Godwin’s upcoming role to Larry Fitzgerald’s, hinting at many of the slot snaps and goals that went to Humphries last year. Eventually, head coach Dirk Koetter is gone, replaced by the more aggressive Bruce Arians, although last year’s offensive coordinator and game caller Todd Monken may be missing. At 6-1,209, Godwin is above average with a speed of 4.42. A year ago, he averaged a robust 8.9 YPT and 14.3 YPC on 95 goals and dropped only two passes throughout the season. Mike Evans is still the team’s main target and likely the Red Zone Pig, and rising star TE OJ Howard will fill in for big games and look around the goal line. But Jameis Winston will throw the ball abundantly in Arians’ presumably passing offense, and Godwin should aim for a career with lofty goals.
After doing nothing in the first eight games of his career, Godwin saw more work in the second half of his rookie season and the results were promising – 15.4 YPC, 9.5 YPT. By weeks 10-17, he had four games of 68 yards or more and demonstrated the ability to stretch the field. Godwin exploded for 111 yards and a week 17 touchdown, the second time he has broken 10 goals. At 6-1, 209 and a speed of 4.42, Godwin is taller and faster than most wideouts, and he’s quick and athletic too. The biggest problem for Godwin is the presence of Mike Evans, anchored as the team’s target pig, along with DeSean Jackson, who is still the team’s fastest wideout and his most dangerous deep threat. But Bucs GM Jason Licht said Godwin showed enough to push for a bigger role, and the team raved about Godwin at OTAs. So there’s a good chance he will replace slot man Adam Humphries in three lineups. Note, however, that the Tampa Bay offense is expected to fight in September as Jameis Winston will be banned for playing the Saints, Eagles and Steelers for the first three weeks.
Godwin, the Buccaneers third-round draft pick, has a chance to see targets sooner rather than later. The Bucs receiving corps is deeper with DeSean Jackson than last year, but Jackson’s lightweight frame prevents him from ever being a high volume gamer and Mike Evans can’t see all of Jameis Winston’s other goals. Enter Godwin, who at 6-1, 205, has decent size and good (4.42 40) speed. He also did a show at the NFL Combine – 36-inch vertical, 126-inch long jump. Godwin has excellent hands and ball skills, and this offseason was training with former Lion Calvin Johnson to work on the intricacies of his game. Godwin will likely be the team’s third WR – though he’ll have to beat veteran Adam Humphries – and both tight ends, OJ Howard and Cameron Brate, will see looks too.
