Defense Testimony Resumes : Live Updates: Trial Over George Floyd’s Killing : NPR

Defense attorney for former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin further presented his case on Wednesday.

The first defense witness for the day is Dr. David Fowler, a retired forensic pathologist who was Chief Medical Officer for the State of Maryland.

Chauvin is charged with the murder of George Floyd, who died after Chauvin held his knee to Floyd’s neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds on Memorial Day last year.

Chauvin’s attorney began presenting the case to the defense on Tuesday, including viewing police cameras from Floyd a traffic obstruction in 2019. The jury also heard from witnesses, including a woman who it was sitting in Floyd’s car when he was approached by the police last May.

A major part of the prosecution has been the testimony of other officials and experts who have said Chauvin is holding Floyd back was not justified and ran against police training.

On Tuesday, Chauvin’s attorney called Barry Brodd, a former officer and expert on the use of force. who said Chauvin “was justified, acted objectively reasonably, and followed Minneapolis Police Department guidelines and current law enforcement standards.”

Judge Peter Cahill said the final arguments on the case are expected to begin on Monday.
