Strengthening in the off-season

June 3, 2021

Coach Urban Meyer challenged Chark (shin) to get stronger in the off-season and the wideout has already added seven pounds in the weight room. Michael DiRocco from ESPN.com reported. ANALYSIS
Meyer didn’t like what he saw of the 24-year-old reviewing a 2020 film, and the new coach reached out to Wideout to voice his concerns. It’s a pivotal point in Chark’s career as he enters a contract year, and he should benefit from more stability as a quarterback as the rookie is the first choice in the standings Trevor Lawrence take control. Chark dwarfed 1,000 yards with eight touchdowns in 2019, but last season he struggled to find consistency with 706 yards and five scores. Adding Marvin Jones should also help open up opportunities for Chark and the offense as a whole.

Past fantasy prospects

Though Chark achieved little in 11 games as a rookie, he broke out in Year 2 and made the most of his 118 goals – 13.8 YPC, 8.5 YPT – for a subpar passing team. At 6-4, 198, and at a mind-boggling speed of 4.34, a 40-inch vertical jump and a 129-inch long jump, Chark’s physical tools are approaching Randy Moss’s territory. While only having a catch of over 40 yards, Chark caught 17 for 20-plus (T-9th), and there’s no doubt he’s fast enough to expand the field. He didn’t see much work in the red zone (15 goals in total, six within the 10) but still scored eight touchdowns and only had four drops throughout the year. With Nick Foles in Chicago, second year quarterback Gardner Minshew’s team was supposed to be all off-season and he was supposed to get better and better his relationship with the Jags’ top receiver. The Jaguars drafted thugs Laviska Shenault in the second round, and Dede Westbrook is still around, but they’ll be more likely to compete with each other and Chris Conley than play Chark’s assured role. Finally, the offense of the Jaguars should improve under the new offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, who had not had a young receiver of this size and speed since his coaching with AJ Green in Cincinnati.

Chark, a former LSU Tiger, was selected in the second round of the 2018 draft and was not a factor in an unproductive offensive for most of the season. He missed five games with a quad injury and had 14 catches for 174 yards in what looked a lot like a receiver relying on raw talent rather than technical skill. At 6-4, 198 pounds and a 4.34 40-yard stroke and a 40-inch vertical height, the 22-year-old still owns elite tools but needs to take a significant step forward this off-season to get them use. Dede Westbrook is locked up for regular snapshots, but beyond that it’s more of a crack shoot for the Jaguars on the wide receiver. Chark has a realistic chance of clinching number 2 or 3 as he competes with Chris Conley, Marquise Lee and Keelan Cole. Upgrading to Nick Foles as quarterback should help Chark from both a development and production standpoint, but at this point it’s difficult to call him a potential sleeper given his troubles last year.

The £ 6-4, 198-pound receiver from the LSU was a potential first-round pick in the April draft, but the Jaguars caught it late in the second round. Chark had a dominant combine with a 4.34 40-yard dash, 40-inch vertical and 129-inch long jump after posting 40 catches for 874 yards (21.9 average) and three touchdowns for the Tigers in 2017 would have. The 21-year-old seems unlikely to take on a large volume role due to the Jaguars’ strong offensive and wide receiver talent, but his potential as a big play threat could lead Chark into his rookie season makes significant contributions.
