A little more than six months after the deadly uprising on January 6th at the US Capitol, the protective fence erected in the course of the siege fell.

The process started on Friday and is expected to take about three days.

The remaining metal fence surrounding the complex is one of the last physical memories of the violent attack on the nation’s Capitol by a mob of supporters of former President Donald Trump attempted to prevent lawmakers from confirming President Biden’s election victory.

It happens … Crews are now pulling down the fence around Capitol Square. This is the last temporary security structure erected after the January 6th Capitol Rising.

An outside fence was removed in March. The U.S. Capitol Police will continue to monitor the intelligence for threats to the complex, and if necessary, the Capitol Architect can reinstall the temporary fences.

The Capitol, which suspended public tours in spring 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, will remain closed to most citizens.

Acting U.S. Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman recently shared the changes The force is deploying after the attack to increase security at the Capitol Complex, including improving lawmakers’ protection, opening regional offices in California and Florida to investigate threats to Congressmen, riot training for officers, and sourcing more Protective gear.

Since the January 6 attack, the government has brought charges against more than 530 people. NPR updates a database of all accused.
