From protests to ‘patriots’: Why China is crushing Hong Kong dissent

In 2019, Hong Kong was rocked by violent mass protests against the government. Now the city is changing – and not in the way the demonstrators had hoped.

The Chinese government cracked down on them, introduced restrictive rules and arrested numerous activists and opposition politicians.

It passed a tough national security law last year and is now reforming the way Hong Kong is run to ensure that only “patriots” can enter local government.

But why exactly is China so eager to suppress dissent in Hong Kong? And what does that mean for the future of the city? The BBC Tessa Wong explains.
