How Not to Suck at Webinars

Ep. 241: Turning Webinars into MASSIVE Real Business (with Brad Swineheart)

Tired of attending soul-sucking webinars? You know the ones who trick you into tossing your router through your computer screen.

Seriously, you would think that we have had to contend with the huge increase in the number of webinars since the pandemic started (167% According to one report, someone would stand up and say we need to learn how to do this right.

But even if the virus threat is much lower, webinars don’t go away. Many companies are considering this stick with webinarsor at least as part of a hybrid model of face-to-face and virtual meetings.

So please, for the sake of all the goodness and sake, if we want to continue hosting webinars, then please listen to this week’s guest advice, Brad Swineheart. He knows a thing or two about delivering smooth and interesting webinars. He is Vice President of Business Development at White Glove, a comprehensive seminar service for finance professionals.

Read the following rules (not tips!) For hosting a webinar. It’s not an exhaustive list, but make sure you meet these minimum requirements so you don’t get attendees to pull their hair out.

1. Ask yourself, “Do we need a webinar?”

Be honest – have you ever created a webinar because you wanted more leads without considering if it will? useful to your audience?

People are far too involved in their own lives and work to watch a webinar when it is of no value to them. Can you clearly state the benefit your audience will get from giving up an hour of their life to hear and watch your webinar?

If you can’t, or if you are not 100% sure that you will get through your own presentation, then don’t do it. There are other ways to get leads.

2. Make sure your topic is worthy of a webinar.

Just because you might think your latest idea deserves a webinar doesn’t mean your audience will.

In the past, when there were more of us in our offices, we had meetings on topics that could easily have been addressed in an email. They were a Waste of time. In the end, everyone would wonder why they had to drop everything and collect it in one room to find out that this year’s budget for the Christmas party will be reduced by $ 200.

Before you start promoting your webinar as the best in history by [fill in the blank]you should make sure it is real. Don’t tick off your audience by disguising a product pitch as something worth skipping your lunch break for.

Wordstream, a company that deals exclusively with online advertising, advises potential moderators to contain their excitement and reconsider their decision if their planned webinar involves:

  • A smaller product version or an update
  • A news-based webinar with little or no new information or opinions
  • A broad, thin webinar on a general topic
  • A webinar that focuses on a tired idea or concept
  • A direct sales deck or product pitch

3. Choose a host who is a confident and energetic speaker

Speaking in public is difficult and scares many people. Don’t think that a presenter who can’t see their audience won’t feel the same discomfort (panic?) When presenting a webinar as when they are on a stage.

Pick a host who will keep your audience in their chairs with increased computer volume. You want an experienced host who enjoys speaking publicly.

You will have an engaging voice. PLEASE no monotones.

They are animated appropriately when they speak.

You will appear confident in front of the camera and exude authenticity.

And they will practice, practice, practice what they will say before going live.

Anything else and no matter how great your message is, you will find people fall off faster than needles from a Christmas tree.

4. Use an impressive slide deck

After the speaker’s voice, the only other aspect of a webinar that will grab your audience’s attention is the slide deck. It must be good.

Almost everyone is familiar with PowerPoint, but there are so many more today free options available. Take a look at a few and choose the one that best suits your needs.

In addition to the look of your slides, you need to know what to put on them. Your slide deck can be written as a series of Prompts you can lead through your script. Your slides shouldn’t be synonymous with the entire script.

Here’s some advice: Include just enough information so that the slides can be used as reference for you, and later for your audience.

  • Keep it simple and consistent. Don’t get carried away with slide transitions or animations. Choose colors and fonts that are easy on the eyes.
  • Use bullets rather than long sentences.
  • Make the slide title a complete thought. Single words are usually not enough.
  • Add facts and statistics. If you don’t include the source in your slides, write it down in case you’re asked.
  • Don’t use unfamiliar acronyms or jargon that your audience doesn’t understand.

5. Have a backup plan

Webinars are technology dependent, so it’s a no-brainer that you should expect something to go wrong. You need to be prepared for any eventuality.

It should go without saying that you do a test run before starting. This means that you should arrive early and make sure everything is okay. In addition:

  • Make sure everything is working – microphones, headsets, lights, computers.
  • Have extra batteries available for all of your equipment.
  • Have a second [fill in the blank] for when your first [fill in the blank] stop working.
  • Make sure your tech support person is on standby.

Now for the reality check. . . Things will go wrong that you didn’t expect.

No panic.

Go with the flow.

Remember, these are the minimum requirements for creating a webinar. There are other suggestions for you to consider and there is no shortage of good ideas on the internet. Think about the needs of your audience, allow yourself to be rehearsed, have reliable equipment at your disposal and you are way ahead of most lay people with a connection and a camera.
