India v England: Eoin Morgan says players can earn T20 World Cup spot in ODIs

India beat England 3-1 in the test series and 3-2 in the T20 series

Captain Eoin Morgan says players from outside England’s Twenty20 side can use the one-day streak against India to fight for the World Cup.

England will be without the one-day regulars Joe Root, Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer for the three-game series that starts on Tuesday.

T20 stars Dawid Malan and Chris Jordan are just reserves for the one-day squad.

“We see the 50-over format between the two T20 World Championships as a building block for our squad,” said Morgan.

“Given the very similar teams, we see both skills as very valuable.

“Playing international cricket is a great opportunity for people who have been on the sidelines and haven’t made a choice yet.”

Batsmen Sam Billings and Liam Livingstone, leg spinner Matt Parkinson and left-wing seaman Reece Topley could get a chance for the entire series in Pune.

The all-rounder Moeen Ali, who was not there in the 3-2 defeat in the T20 series in England, should also be in demand.

The 33-year-old contracted coronavirus in Sri Lanka in January and only contested one of four possible tests on tour before resting for the second half of the 1-3 loss of the English test series in India.

“The little time Mo spent at home before this show brought him the world of good,” said Morgan.

“He came back refreshed and energetic. He’s a very laid back guy who always has a reasonable perspective on life and sport and the role he plays in society. He travels really well.”

England, the over 50-year-old world champion, will try to get doubles at the T20 World Cup in India in October and November.

There’s another T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022 before England defend their 50-over crown in India in 2023.

“Our white ball teams are extremely knowledgeable,” said Morgan, 34. “Building on our 2019 World Cup win, it’s important that we keep pushing this forward. If we rest on our laurels, it will become a bigger one Challenge.” to improve. “

Just like the last three games of the T20 series in Ahmedabad, the games in Pune will be played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic.

India captain Virat Kohli failed to batting an eye on his side’s win in the T20 series playoff, but he did confirm that Shikhar Dhawan will partner with Rohit Sharma at the top of the agenda.
