American troops have been in Afghanistan for nearly twenty years. Every president since George W. Bush has promised an early end to the fighting and US withdrawal, but none have made it. The Trump card The government has signed an agreement with the Taliban to end the American military presence in May this year. Peace talks are ongoing in Doha, Qatar. But in the past few months hundreds of Afghans have been killed in a series of attacks apparently orchestrated by the Taliban – and some perhaps by the government in Kabul.
