ANALYSIS
The move takes place after the multi-faceted signing by the team Cordarrelle Patterson and possibly this points to the addition of a second or third round, rolling back in the upcoming NFL draft Tori McElhaney from The Athletic. Smith finished the 2020 campaign – his third with the Falcons – with 268 rushing yards and a TD in 63 rushing attempts to get 75 yards with 17 catches. The 25-year-old will now try to assert himself elsewhere as a defender.

Past fantasy prospects

Another injury-ridden season for Devonta Freeman put Smith in a pretty prominent role in his rookie campaign, but the judges are still unsure if he can handle a constant workload in the NFL. In many ways, the southern Mississippi product, a discount version of Freeman, stumbled onto 3.5 YPC when he saw regular snaps on Week 4, and he was no different by the air, only scooping 4.8 meters per target. Smith runs with some strength (for a 195 pound back) and has been a productive receiver in college, but a lack of speed or evasiveness limits his advantage. New offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter preferred bulkier running backs in Tampa Bay, but with Tevin Coleman moving to San Francisco, at least more snaps and touches will be available. Smith will have to improve on his second season to take advantage of the benefits, especially after the addition of the much larger Qadree Ollison in the fifth round of the draft.

The Falcons Front Office may have witnessed Deja Vu when Smith designed it in the fourth round of this year. On 5-9,195, Smith’s scouting report reads similar to that of the 2014 fourth round team, a Devonta Freeman. Much like his new teammate, Smith would be typed as a handover specialist in many organizations due to his short stature and natural reception skills, although he shows surprising strength in running thanks to a low pad level and strong lower body. What he lacks is Freeman’s vanity, as Smith doesn’t have the footwork or agility to set up budding tacklers for bad angles or ugly smells. Even if injuries to Freeman or Tevin Coleman did open up snapshots for the rookie, it’s hard to imagine he’d take his chance the way Freeman once did. However, if he gets his chance, Smith’s overall profile will fit in well with Atlanta’s scheme.
