Improvement as a pass catcher

June 8, 2021

Head coach Jim Harbaugh announced Tuesday that Dobbins has made significant progress in the passing game. Jeff Zrebiec from The Athletic reported. ANALYSIS
Dobbins showed explosiveness as a runner (6.0 YPC) last season but seems to be aiming for extra reps by improving his receiver skills. This is especially important as Harbaugh on Tuesday also stressed his interest in getting running backs more involved in this area in 2021. Dobbins saw his workload increase last season to an average of 12.8 carries for 82.5 yards and 1.2 rushing touchdowns per game over his last six regular season games, which could signal a breakthrough in his sophomore year. However, the Ravens recently committed to it as well Gus Edwards for another two seasons, so Dobbins will have competition for reruns in the years to come.

2020 fantasy outlook

Dobbins, a three-year-old starter at Ohio State, is a chiseled 5-9, 209, with enough strength to punish tacklers and more than enough speed to run past them. While a gnawing ankle injury prevented him from fully participating in the combine, his workouts as an 18-year-old dropping out of high school were staggering (he ran a 4.45 40 and his 43.1-inch vertical would have been the second tallest. ) from a college RB since 2006). He also flashed in Ohio State, leading the nation with 31 runs of 15+ yards last season. Dobbins even showed some skill as a receiver and pass protector, cementing his status as a potential three-down option in the NFL. This season, he is likely to be part of a backfield committee for Baltimore that put him 55th overall. The Ravens led the league with 596 rush attempts last season and set an NFL record of 3,296 rushing yards, but it was quarterback Lamar Jackson who led the way with 37 percent of the yards and a third of the touchdowns and Mark Ingram, Gus Edwards, and Justice Hill left with a combined 393 carries for 1,954 yards and 14 TDs. That’s still a big production without a doubt, but it’s going to be tough for Dobbins to take more than half the cake as a rookie considering Ingram, Edwards and Hill stay on the list.
