ANALYSIS
Conner was with the Cardinals on Monday and is said to have reached a deal less than 24 hours later. After spending the first four years of his career in Pittsburgh, the nearly 26-year-old joins a field in Arizona Chase Edmonds is the only other player with significant NFL experience. Granted, the Cardinals still have plenty of time to add more bodies, especially during the upcoming NFL draft. Conner is still in rehab after off-season toe surgery, but the expectation is that he will be healthy sometime in June.

Past fantasy prospects

In his sophomore year, Conner became a true hometown hero for the Steelers. He was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, and enrolled in Pitt, where he did 26 touchdowns in his sophomore year and then overcame Hodgkin lymphoma to become a third-round election in the 2017 draft. Conner got the chance to start for the Steelers when Le’Veon Bell’s annual preseason holdout turned into a slow, seasonal divorce between the declining star and the franchise. Conner’s 135 yard two TD performance on the ground in Week 1 helped fans quickly forget Bell. While the rest of his season was a little more unpredictable, Conner still showed enough to cement his hold on the No. 1 before an ankle injury cost him three games late in the season. Conner, who was primarily viewed as a power-back from college, turned out to be a skilled receiver, but it’s still his ability to plow through contact that remains his best asset – his 24 broken tackles against rushes that hit on in ninth place in the league. and his 17 stretcher tied within the 5 yard line for third place as he converted 53 percent. That bulldozer approach can lead to further injuries (he missed the time twice in two seasons late in the year), but with Jaylen Samuels and Benny Snell as capable backups, the Steelers probably won’t drag Conner into the dirt with a massive workload like that they did it to Bell.

Conner, who was elected in the third round in last year’s draft, had little chance of showing he was worth the investment as Le’Veon Bell dominated the backcourt before Conner sustained a knee injury in week 15, which was his campaign ended prematurely. The 23-year-old is used to setbacks – he’s already returned from Hodgkin’s lymphoma, so a little MCL exposure shouldn’t be a big deal. Conner is a stocky back who ran with power and anger during a productive college career at Pitt, often pushing defenders aside with stiff arms before dropping his shoulder at the end of runs. He’s also shown balance for keeping his feet in traffic, but he’s not particularly elusive and his receiver and pass blocker skills are rudimentary. His best fit in the NFL could be a short residue, and in that role he could be an effective addition to Bell. Of course, the Steelers apparently intend to squeeze every snapshot they can out of their star before it walks out the door – a plan that would leave Conner little work again.

Conner, currently listed at 6-1,233 pounds, overcame Hodgkins lymphoma and a torn MCL from 2015 only to return to the field in 2016. He returned with a leaner build and improved pass catching skills. The 2017 third-placed finisher doesn’t look like a stellar talent and doesn’t have much opportunity to produce behind Bell, but he is likely talented enough to produce in case Le’Veon Bell should be out at one point. Conner finished his college career at the University of Pittsburgh with 3,733 yards (5.6 YPC) and 52 touchdowns over 39 games.
