How do Josh Gordon’s readings compare to other broadband receivers?
This section compares his draft training metrics with players in the same position. The bar represents the player’s percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway, the player will fall into the 50th percentile for that metric and this is considered average.
* The readings for hand length, arm length, 40 yard dash, vertical jump, long jump and bench press are from his Pro Day. All others are from the NFL Combine.
It’s amazing that we’re still talking about this guy. But 28-year-old Gordon signed his $ 2 million freelance agent tender with the Patriots in April. Given the close end of Rob Gronkowski and the lack of depth of the team with a recipient beyond 33, there is no better situation for an unestablished recipient -year-old Julian Edelman. (The team added N’Keal Harry with 32nd overall win, but the rookie ended up on short-term IR to start the season.) At 6-3, 225 and a speed of 4.52, Gordon is the whole package – big , immensely strong, powerful and fast for its size. Last year was his first regular season since his 2013 outbreak, and despite six break-ins at 72 goals, the numbers per game were excellent – 18.0 YPC, 10.2 YPT, three receptions over 40 yards. The problem with this is that Gordon closed down for the season after week 15 over psychological concerns and was later indefinitely suspended by the NFL for multiple violations of its substance abuse policy. Reinstated in August, Gordon is still fighting for goals and not allowed to fall behind. But the upside is that Tom Brady is number 1 off target.
That Gordon is back in the league at all comes as a surprise itself. He hadn’t played since 2014 before being reinstated, and it turns out that not only did he fall victim to the NFL’s draconian marijuana policies, but he actually played drunk and high in 2013 when he set the league on fire (no pun intended)) en route to 1,646 yards in 14 games. Allegedly sober, the 27-year-old Gordon will try in 2018 to repeat the success, if not the conditions under which he achieved it. We took a look at what he did in five games last year – 18.6 YPC, 8.0 YPT on 42 goals despite not having a training camp or practice for most of the year with the unpredictable rookie QB DeShone Kizer in the centre. At 6-3, 225 and a combine speed of 4.52 (although there have been reports he ran below 4.4 during his practice last year) Gordon is the # 1 prototype receiver that can play anywhere on the field . During his massive 2013 year, he was a deep threat, a presence in the red zone, and someone who could break the tackles once caught. Heading into 2018, the Browns have made significant improvements to their QB situation with Tyrod Taylor, who was able to bond with Sammy Watkins in Buffalo on deep balls. The Browns also took advantage of number 1 at Baker Mayfield, who will fight for the starting job at the camp. Recall that Gordon did a lot of damage five years ago with Brandon Weeden, Brian Hoyer, and Jason Campbell. So it is the first time that he works with an adequate signal caller. It remains to be seen if Gordon is still the same player at 27 years old and three seasons outside of the league. He was excused from the start of training camp for focusing on his mental health, but he returned to the team on August 18 and should still have time to prepare for Week 1.
Gordon still remains on the Browns’ list, despite not having been on the field since 2014 when he took the league by storm as the only bright spot on offense. In May, the 26-year-old was denied reinstatement by the NFL for multiple drug abuse violations, so he had the next opportunity to apply in the fall. If he is reinstated at some point, the Browns have announced that they will consider maintaining the troubled wideout, but that debate can only take place if the league gives the go-ahead. Until then, Gordon will not be able to participate in team activities as the unfortunate saga continues for one of the league’s former stars. All of this is sad, even if Gordon were cleared for a comeback it could take some time to get back in game shape and even then it remains unknown what kind of role he would fill on offense.
The good news is that Gordon was reinstated by the NFL under certain conditions after being suspended for four games earlier in the season. That said, it’s possible that too much time has passed and it will never regain the greatness of 2013. But Gordon just turned 25 and we mustn’t forget that he was the best WR in the NFL despite playing with some of the league’s worst QBs. Gordon is elite at 6-3,225 and his 4.5240 is fast enough for a physically dominant WR. It remains to be seen what the Browns have in store for Gordon in both the short term and Week 5, but the talented receiver, who last played in an NFL game in December 2014, has the benefit of reappearing as a fantasy factor in the year 2016, while the Browns offer a dangerous pass-catch option at Wideout versus much-touted rookie Corey Coleman.
Gordon has been banned from the NFL for one year for violating the league’s drug abuse policy and will therefore be putting the 2015 season on hold.
Gordon tested positive for marijuana that off-season, resulting in a year-long ban that was eventually upheld on appeal. He can apply for reinstatement next year. It’s a huge hit for the Browns as Gordon has had a season not only leading the league in reception. He led it 147 yards – in just 14 games. Gordon accomplished this feat by capturing passes from trio Brandon Weeden, Jason Campbell and Brian Hoyer. At 6-3, 225 and 4.5x, Gordon has the size and speed of the prototypical # 1 receiver. He led the NFL with nine catches greater than 40 yards and 28 catches greater than 20 yards – despite being too Had a two-game suspension earlier this year. Among receivers with 100 or more targets, Gordon ranked first in yards per catch (18.9) and second only to DeSean Jackson at 10.4 yards per target (YPT), despite playing for a team that scored 6 , 4 YPA took 29th place.
The Browns took the chance for Gordon and last year skipped a selection in the second round to move him into the additional round. Gordon managed a robust 8.5 YPT and 16.1 YPC on a subpar team while scoring five touchdowns on just 95 goals. At 6-3, 221 and a speed of 4.5, Gordon is a prototypical # 1 target with the size of the red zone and enough explosiveness to hit the defense deep. He heads up as the team’s # 1 in 2013 and the most dangerous outside playmaker as Greg Little has proven little more than a threat to ball possession, and just an average threat. Keep in mind that Gordon is banned from the first two regular season games after violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
After failing to address the broad recipient position in the April draft until they picked Travis Benjamin in the fourth round, the Browns caused a sensation when they took Gordon in the second round of the addendum. It’s a calculated risk as he missed all of 2011 after being suspended by Baylor before moving to Utah. In his second season in 2010 at Baylor, he scored 42 catches for 714 yards (17.0 YPC) and seven touchdowns. It’s the prototypical size (6-foot-3) and speed (4.52×40 times) to be successful on a professional level, but it’s unclear how much rust to knock off first. The opportunity is there for Gordon as there isn’t much talent in Cleveland that he has to jump to get a look and the Browns made a significant commitment to get it by sacrificing next year’s second round player, so it could be an interesting choice for sleepers in the later design rounds this summer.
