Juszczyk turned another Pro Bowl season and started a new career by receiving yards (324) in addition to his usual excellent barrel blocking. Fullbacks are a dying breed in the NFL and rarely spark fantasy conversations, but Juice seemed to be gaining a bit of fantasy traction in the league early in the season. An average of 2.8 receptions and 39.4 yards were received in the first five games of the season. However, that production died when Nick Mullens took the lead as he rarely used his full-back in passing (1.8 goals per in the last eight games of the season). The 49ers extended Juszczyk’s contract option and the full-back could look to career offensive numbers across the board if Jimmy Garoppolo, who added Juszczyk’s value the most last season, stays healthy throughout the season.
Juszczyk had a slow offensive start with his new club and scored only 14 hits for 103 yards in the first nine weeks of the season (seven healthy games). The Swiss Army Knife turned things on in the second half with 24 receptions and 230 receiving yards and ending with 315 receiving yards and a touchdown that was the best among any defenders in the league. “Juice” is more valuable to his actual football club than it is to fantasy owners, as the full-back position is of no use in standard formats. Still, it wouldn’t be surprising if he built on last year’s reception numbers after a full off season with his new quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and another year under offensive guru Kyle Shanahan.
Juszczyk was one of the 49ers’ biggest free agent additions this off-season, signing a four-year deal after spending four years in Baltimore. The versatile full-back garnered 97 receptions (132 goals), 769 yards, and five touchdowns in his three years as a starter, putting the ability to play in a position normally lacking. Working with offensively minded Kyle Shanahan, who maximized Patrick DiMarco’s reception skills in Atlanta, could be a heavenly game.
Juszczyk made a name for himself as one of the NFL’s better defenders in the final year of his rookie contract. He can catch the ball well for an athlete of his stature and was often used as a check-down option by Joe Flacco in 2015, as evidenced by his 41 receptions. However, it is seldom given a stretcher to complement these receptions and is an afterthought, even in the deepest formats.
Juszczyk arrived from Harvard in 2013 with the skills of an H-back, but the Ravens made him more of a traditional lead blocker, with the versatility of still adding in the occasional reception. He was among the top defenders at Snaps in 2014, ending up 19 catches for 182 yards and a touchdown despite losing a few fumbling. He has yet to record a carry through two NFL seasons.
After years of deploying lead blocker specialists, the Ravens are expected to hand over the start fullback job to Juszczyk, who is profiling himself as the more versatile H-back guy. There is some hope that he will become a reliable receiving option, but it’s unclear how often the Ravens will even use a full-back as the team will likely use two TE sets a lot.
Juszczyk is a rookie from Harvard, where he mostly played a close finish. He will act as the backup defender behind Vontae Leach and could see H-back for some seasons too.
