Leeds United 2-1 Sheffield United: Leeds move into top half of Premier League

Jack Harrison kicked off before Phil Jagielka turned his cross into his own net

Leeds United scored at the start of each half to beat Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United and advance to the top half of the Premier League.

Leeds were firmly in the lead on a sunny Elland Road, taking the lead early on when Raphinha scored his seventh goal of the season for Jack Harrison.

The hosts had to regret their missed chances during the first-half break when Ben Osborn forced the ball over the line after Oli McBurnie’s shot was deflected into his way.

But Leeds were back up within four minutes of the second half and Phil Jagielka turned Harrison’s low cross into his own net.

Substitutes Rhian Brewster and Oliver Burke approached a late equalizer for the relegation-threatened guests, who are 14 points ahead of safety after eight games remaining.

But Leeds were worthy winners on a day they remembered fans Chris Loftus and Kevin Speight killed in Turkey before their Uefa Cup game against Galatasaray in April 2000 and the club’s record scorer and former captain Peter Lorimer, the died last month.

Leeds’ just switches to the side that won in Fulham Current captain Liam Cooper was back on the defensive ahead of the international break, but Raphinha and midfielder Tyler Roberts shone as Leeds moved up to 10th over Aston Villa.

More will follow.
