A bloody running style and heavy workload from college caught up with Fournette last year. Various lower body injuries cost him seven games, and a league suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct put him out of action for another game. Fournette often looked sluggish when out on the field, and his 3,3-YPC cannot be dismissed as the mere product of too many transfers in short-range situations (11 transfers within the 5-yard line, T-15 ). Nevertheless, the jaguars seem to be committed to their fourth overall victory in 2017 as their bell cow. They let TJ Yeldon and Carlos Hyde go to the free agency and then replace them with former Texans Alfred Blue and Ryquell Armstead from the fifth round. When he’s 100 percent healthy, Fournette still displays strength and explosiveness, with just enough wobble to miss the occasional defender in space, despite presenting such a big target. His running style fits the team’s personality, and if Nick Foles replaces Blake Bortles in the middle, the offense could be even more dependent on his ground attack. However, Fournette doesn’t offer much as a receiver. The advantage he has depends on the possibilities of the goal line and touchdown potential. All of his rush TDs last season were within the 5 yard line. The team continues to aim to win based on their quick attack and defense. Fournette just needs to stay healthy enough to take advantage of the plan.
Nagging lower body injuries cost Fournette three games of his rookie season and left him looking more than 100 percent healthy in a few, but the Jaguars had few other complaints about the number 4 standings. At 6: 0, 228, Fournette runs on purpose, if not downright threatening, and attacks holes and tacklers head-on with his wild outburst. In bypassed tackles, he finished 10th among the running backs. More than just a powerback, however, he’s showing respectable hands as receivers and enhancing instincts as pass protection, along with nimble feet to make defenders look foolish on the rare occasion he chooses to avoid contact instead of making him look plow through. The Jaguars gave Chris Ivory and TJ Yeldon a run last season to keep Fournette fresh, but the rookie still saw plenty of broadcasts as the offensive became an addition to the team’s elite defenses. His history of injuries dating back to college is worrying, and even if Ivory isn’t in the picture, Fournette’s workload may not increase significantly as Corey Grant will take on a larger role behind the scenes. Fournette’s work on the goal line – he finished tenth in the league with nine transfers within the 5-yard line – should ensure he stays productive and the signing of G Andrew Norwell stabilizes the offensive line.
Ankle injuries limited Fournette to seven games in his final season at LSU, but cost him nothing on draft day as the Jaguars stormed him back with a fourth overall win as a new lead. At 6-1,235, he’s a dominant physical runner who terrified the college’s defenses with his combination of speed and breakout, not to mention a willingness, even desire, to run over potential tacklers. Fournette has a bit of finesse in his game, showing good balance in traffic and some reception skills, but his furious downhill style is best for a running game designed to wear the opponent down over four quarters. One such endeavor would be a departure from a Jacksonville crime previously built around Blake Bortles, but head coach Doug Marrone and new Executive Vice President Tom Coughlin both prefer an old-school smash-mouth style, so that’s what Change not possible would be surprising. If there’s a problem with Fournette it is his ability to persist under the penalty his running style demands over an NFL schedule of 16 games, but he will go to camp that has fully recovered from last year’s ankle problems . Even if TJ Yeldon and Chris Ivory are still on the roster to share the broadcasts, Fournette is expected to see a heavy workload right away to justify his draft slot and he could emerge as the next real bell cow in the league.
