Lewis Hamilton beats Sergio Perez to Imola pole

The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix on Sunday can be seen live on Radio 5 Live Sports Extra and the BBC Sport website

Lewis Hamilton took pole position in front of Red Bulls Sergio Perez in a thrilling qualifying session at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Hamilton had a lead of just 0.035 seconds in the Mercedes when Perez defeated team-mate Max Verstappen only in the second race of the Mexican for Red Bull.

Charles Leclerc put the Ferrari in fourth place, while Valtteri Bottas in the second Mercedes only ended up in eighth place.

Lando Norris was second fastest in the McLaren, but had canceled his lap time due to exceeding the track limits and was seventh.

It was a bitter blow to the Englishman, who had looked fast throughout the session and seemed to have a chance to qualify among the Mercedes and Red Bulls.

He was no more than a foot off the track with the fast left-hander at Piratella, where countless drivers had cleared lap times over the weekend.

And while Hamilton appears to be in pole position, it was a clear surprise for the Mercedes team, judging by the exchange he later had on team radio with race engineer Peter Bonnington, as both expressed their disbelief over the win over the Red Bulls Expressed.
