Bruno Fernandes’ penalty after 101 seconds is the earliest goal conceded by Man City in a league game at the Etihad Stadium
Manchester United brought down Manchester City’s 21 straight wins in all competitions with a formidable Derby win at Etihad Stadium.
Pep Guardiola’s side still have a seemingly unassailable 11-point lead at the top of the Premier League, but the way United have subdued a previously unstoppable city and improved their own top 4 chances is going to give the manager one Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his players give an enormous boost to confidence.
United, who have now unbeaten 22 league games – including 14 wins – stunned City with a quick start and were ahead after a penalty within the first 30 seconds when Gabriel Jesus fouled the impressive Antony Martial.
Bruno Fernandes scored on the spot despite City Keeper Ederson having a strong hand on the ball and United scored the win with a mix of solid defense and constant threat at break.
Rodri almost equaled shortly after the break when his shot looked out of the corner of the post and the crossbar, but United sealed the win – and sentenced City to their first loss since a 2-2 loss at Tottenham on November 21 – as the standout Shaw, who had previously missed a chance to double United’s lead, counterattacked and exchanged passes with Marcus Rashford before taking down Ederson with a low shot.
Solskjaer’s team, which hadn’t scored a goal in the last three games, moved one point back to second place ahead of Leicester City as the battle for a place in the top four tightened.
More will follow.
