Mack suffered a broken Achilles tendon in week 1 of the 2020 campaign and paved the way for Jonathan Taylor to act as Indianapolis’ top option between tackles right in front of the gate. The 25-year-old seems destined to be free to choose in mid-March. Therefore, it is critical to his contract prospects to give teams confidence in his health. While Mack might have a hard time making a multiyear deal with sizable guaranteed money, he shouldn’t have much trouble getting the interest of teams in need of a reliable backlog. He is only a year away from a 1,091-yard rushing season in which he hit the ground eight times in 14 games.

Past fantasy prospects
Mack competed as a popular sleeper last year, but after just 18 offensive snaps in week 5 due to lower body injuries, it looked like the talented but fragile back was staring at a lost season. However, he got well in week 6 and immediately went to races. Despite missing four games, he ended up scrimmage over 1,000 yards. The South Florida product is extraordinarily elusive in the open field, but its secret weapon has been the rise of the Colts offensive line. The addition of Quenton Nelson put the unit in elite status, leaving Mack with bigger holes and a lot more running space than the year before. He’s not a particularly physical runner (his 16 broken tackles were way below average for a feature back) and he had less than half the team’s carry within the 5-yard line, despite converting six out of 13. Mack still needs to improve as a receiver and show he can stay in the field to become a real bell cow, but with only Jordan Wilkins and Nyheim Hines vying for broadcasts, Mack is poised for a productive 2019.
Few rookie campaigns have been as predictable as Mack’s 2017. They lagged behind Frank Gore on the depth map while playing on an offensive that didn’t pose a major vertical threat without Andrew Luck at the center. The fourth round from South Florida couldn’t produce any big numbers, but he showed flashes of his big-play ability with seven runs of 15 yards or more on just 93 transfers. At 6-0-210, Mack compensated for his thin body at a rate that seems better than his 4.5-40 time, along with ankle-breaking movements that made defenders routinely gasp. It’s also worth noting that he spent most of 2017 playing through a torn labrum in his shoulder – which ultimately requires off-season surgery – which could explain his reluctance to run through tackles or fully engage lightning pass rushers . Returning veteran Robert Turbin will be limited to short-haul work upon his return from a four-game ban, and while the Colts Nyheim Hines and Jordan Wilkins drafted to battle for snaps, the former are profiling themselves as passport catching specialists and the latter looks like a smaller version of Mack. If Luck can return and enforce collateral right away, the second grader has the knack for taking advantage of the extra space. Mack faces another setback after putting strain on an Achilles tendon the first week of preseason, which puts his availability in week 1 in doubt.
Mack, who was selected from South Florida in the fourth round, may give the Colts a big bunny in their field to complement Frank Gore’s slow but steady turtle act. Showing incredible evasiveness and balance at USF, Mack routinely missed tacklers on his way to six TD runs of 40 yards or more in his senior college season – and he has the breakout of hitting a hole with power when he gets one identified. But he tries too often to throw a game outside for a home run instead of settling for a smaller opening inside, which could get him in trouble against faster NFL defenders. Gore’s guidance could help the novice temper these instincts and learn when it is best to take what he has given. Mack is slated to take on a pace-change role in 2017 but could be an option for bigger things after Gore’s retirement.
