SANTA BARBARA, California (AP) – The second baby for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex is officially here: Meghan gave birth to a healthy girl on Friday.
A spokesman for Prince Harry and Meghan said Sunday the couple greeted their child Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor at 11:40 am. Their daughter weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces.
Her first name Lilibet is a reference to Her Majesty the Queen’s nickname. Her middle name is in honor of her grandmother and Harry’s mother. The baby is eighth in line to the British throne.
The couple made a statement along with the announcement on Sunday, writing, “It is more than we could ever have imagined and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we have felt from around the world. Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family. “
No photos of the newborn or Sussex accompanied the announcement.
Harry and the American actress Meghan Markle were married in May 2018 at Windsor Castle. A year later, their son Archie was born.
In early 2020, Meghan and Harry announced that they were giving up their royal duties and moving to North America, citing the intolerable interference and racist attitudes of the British media. They live in Montecito, a posh neighborhood near Santa Barbara, California.
The couple’s Oprah interview raised racism
The birth comes after Harry and Meghan’s explosive TV interview with Oprah Winfrey in March. The couple described painful discussions about their first child’s skin color, the loss of royal protection, and the intense pressures that made them think about suicide.
Buckingham Palace said the couple’s allegations of racism were “worrying”. The royal family said the issue will be addressed privately.
Winfrey and Harry, on mental illness, recently collaborated on the Apple TV + series, “The Me You Can’t See,” on mental health.
Last year, Meghan announced that she had a miscarriage in July 2020 and gave a personal account of the traumatic experience in hopes of helping others.
Months before the miscarriage, Harry said the royal family cut him off financially in early 2020 after announcing plans to step down from his roles. But thanks to the money left by his mother, Princess Diana, he was able to afford security for his family.
Speaking to Winfrey, Meghan said she was concerned that her son did not have a royal title because it meant he would not be given security. said it was “very difficult” to digest anything during pregnancy. More than the title “Prince”, she was most concerned about the safety and protection of her son.
Meghan said it was hard for her to understand why there were concerns within the royal family about her son’s skin color. She said it was difficult for her to “split up” these conversations.
Harry also said that Meghan’s treatment and relationship with his family had lasting effects.
Harry and Meghan’s departure from royal duties began in March 2020 due to what they described as the British media’s interference and racist attitudes towards the Duchess.
