After two seasons on the San Francisco bank, Davis traveled the coast to Seattle in 2017 and saw a slight increase in odds in a field that was still trying to replace Marshawn Lynch. Despite the addition of Rashaad Penny from the first round and the appearance of Chris Carson, Davis finally got his chance in Week 4 of 2018 when he was eliminated with 21 carry against the Cardinals 101 yards and two TDs. While this was his high water mark for the year, Davis was an effective part of the Seahawks’ new committee, which for the first time since college ran in power and turned upside down as a receiver. The performance earned him a free agent payday in Chicago on which he may appear as a new addition to Tarik Cohen in place of Jordan Howard. Davis offers more versatility than Howard, without much loss of effectiveness on early downs or short yardage spots. Of course, in the third round of drafting, the team also added David Montgomery, and the rookie will be battling for many of the same snaps as Davis. Despite the uniform change and a two-year contract worth $ 6 million, the prospects for the season haven’t improved much.

Davis was torn from the 49ers in the last preseason and ended up on the Seahawks’ training team and ultimately on their matchday list. He played six games without doing anything special as his mediocre grade of 3.5 YPC was still a career high. The 2015 fourth round pick has the setting Seattle is looking for in a rewind at 5-9, 217, and it showed an uptrend of three downs in college in South Carolina, but those skills have barely been demonstrated since his professional career. The team put a lot of effort into the draft for Rashaad Penny, bringing back the first week starter in Chris Carson so Davis only appears to be tied to a deep role if he keeps a seat. He’s made a career high of 15 passes last season and could occasionally take on a third-down role if he turns out to be the back best protecting Russell Wilson from lightning.

Davis, a previous round four selection, joined the Seahawks in the off-season after spending the final season with rival San Francisco. For his last two seasons with the 49ers, Davis posted 108 yards and a touchdown on 54 attempts to make 10 receptions for 53 yards in 14 games. He will now battle a roster of young talent to secure a reserve spot in the Seattle backcourt. Davis lacks the experience that could hurt his chances, but his ability to catch a pass off the field could help him secure a spot in the role of the depth map in 2017.

In his rookie campaign, Davis had disappointing results with 1.7 YPC in 35 rush attempts. To make the injury worse, he sustained a hand injury and missed a good part of the season. He entered the training camp faster and the results were evident in his first two preseason games, in which he won 98 yards in just 10 runs. The strong start made Davis a likely candidate to run the team back in third or fourth.

The 49ers picked Davis from South Carolina in the fourth round of this off-season. At 5-foot-9, Davis doesn’t seem like a north-south runner, but his 220-pound frame and low center of gravity give him the ability to find his way around between tackles. He’s currently on the depth map behind Carlos Hyde, Reggie Bush and Kendall Hunter, but a strong training camp and preseason could make him jump either Bush or Hunter. Davis is also best placed to be the all-rounder should Hyde suffer an injury this season.
