With the news that Simone Biles is out of the women’s all-around competition, Sunisa Lee is the American gymnast most likely to become an Olympic champion at the end of the day. The contest starts at 6:50 a.m. ET and we’ll be here with all the updates for a very close contest.
US gymnasts start strong
If the first rotation was a clue, it will be a very interesting night in Tokyo. Americans Sunisa Lee and Jade Carey both opened in the vault and made their cases as legitimate medal contenders.
Lee, who entered the event first, had an almost clean Yurchenko double twist and earned 14.6. Carey, who had the second highest jump score in Sunday qualifying, scored a 15.2 for her Cheng. She had an easy jump back on the landing but otherwise made a very strong opening statement.

Lee and Carey hugged after they both finished the event, apparently both pleased with their results.
The Brazilian Rebecca Andrade, who achieved the third highest number of qualifying points in the jump, received a 15.3 – the best number of points of the evening in all events so far. The 22-year-old has had her third ACL operation and finished 11th in the all-around competition in Rio. – D’Arcy Maine
