Premier League TV rights: Broadcasters agree to roll over existing deal

The current live TV rights are owned by Sky, BT and Amazon, while the BBC has shown Premier League matches live during the pandemic and fans cannot participate in matches

The Premier League has agreed to extend its existing television contract with broadcasters for a further three years.

The new contract with Sky Sports, BT Sport, Amazon Prime Video and BBC Sport runs from 2022 to 2025.

The current £ 4.7 billion deal was closed in 2018 and represented a 10% loss in value.

Government approval will be contained in an exclusion ordinance under the 1998 Competition Act.

It allows the Premier League to complete the renewals without going through the normal bidding process for broadcast rights.

The clubs feared that there could be further depreciation if the usual open market auction started next month as planned.

The value of rights for domestic leagues in Europe also appears to have peaked.

The Premier League says the renewals will provide financial security for professional clubs and will allow clubs across the football pyramid to provide an additional £ 100 million in funding over the next four years.

The additional funds will be available to more than 1,000 clubs in the National League system, in women’s and girls’ football, in the EFL League One and League Two clubs, and in the Football Foundation.

It will also support a number of football-wide projects, including the Premier League’s work on head injuries in football, anti-discrimination and fan groups.

Richard Masters, Executive Director of the Premier League, said: “We would like to express our gratitude to our broadcast partners for their continued commitment to the Premier League and support for the football pyramid.

“Covid-19 has had a significant impact on football and renewals with our UK broadcast partners will reduce uncertainty, create stability and build trust in the football pyramid.”
