The 49ers backfield had a lot of mouths to feed last year, but Mostert announced early that he would not get lost in the shuffle. A 151-meter eruption in Week 2 made him a waiver-wire darling, and while he went up and down after that, by the end of the season he had advanced to the top of the depths chart in Kyle Shanahan’s RB-friendly offensive. Mostert found the end zone at least once in every game from weeks 12 to 17 and accumulated 515 scrimmage yards and eight total points in those six games before sending the Packers home with 220 rushing yards and four touchdowns in the NFC championship game. Not bad for a guy typed as a special team player who jumped through five organizations in his first three NFL seasons after failing to draft Purdue. Mostert’s biggest asset is his electric speed in the open field – he runs a 4.34 40 – and no back in the league has turned a greater percentage of his carries into gains of at least 15 yards. He even flashed a little power when needed and finished 18th among 46 qualified running backs in the broken tackle rate and 23rd in average yards after contact (2.2). Mostert said he added to that off-season in anticipation of a bigger workload this year, although Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon are still on the list while Matt Breida was swapped for Miami in April. Shanahan’s longstanding fondness for multiplayer backfields makes a Bell Cow role unlikely for Mostert, but even a modest increase in volume to 200 carries could have a huge impact on an efficient attack.

Mostert was rewarded with a three-year contract in this offseason after having achieved 261 rushing yards in his career in addition to his excellent work as a shooter in special teams with only 34 carries (7.7 YPC). The 27-year-old will find himself on the depth map earlier this year due to the inclusion of Tevin Coleman, but his squad spot should be safe due to the special teamwork. In the unfortunate event that a Coleman, Jerick McKinnon and Matt Breida combo is injured, Mostert would have a bigger role due to his brief outbreak in 2018.

The running back journeyman worked his way up in San Francisco’s 53-man squad last season and mainly worked in special teams (only six carries in 11 games). Jerick McKinnon’s knee injury at the end of the season results in an easy opening, but the Niners appear ready to split the work with Alfred Morris and Matt Breida. Mostert will likely take most of his snapshots in special teams.

Already a running back journeyman (five teams in two seasons), Mostert entered camp as a long shot to reach the 53-man roster, but an impressive pre-season performance got him through cutdown day. He mainly plays in special teams, although a role on the offensive is not entirely excluded.

By the time he entered his second NFL offseason, Mostert appeared to have turned some heads in the course of Cleveland’s offseason program and is reportedly firmly in the mix to compete, if not so, for the Browns’ No. 4 running back gig to compete with Glenn Winston for 3rd place. Thanks to his speed, Mostert was also able to secure a role in special teams. Ultimately, Mostert appears poised to earn a spot on the Browns’ regular season roster and is likely to have his biggest impact on the kickoffs return.

Mostert was not drafted in May. He’ll have a look at it during training camp, but he’ll have to skip Kenjon Barner to get a shot at the 53-man roster. Even then, he will hardly see the field.
