Jets are still evaluating options
February 22, 2021
The Jets intend to fully evaluate the quarterback prospect of the 2021 NFL Draft before making a decision with the team about Darnold’s future. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network Reports. ANALYSIS
Rapoport notes that the Jets have gotten “real interest” in trading Darnold, who the team voted 3rd overall in the 2018 NFL draft, but that any deal has to wait for the best prospects to come to their Pro Days and the ones that followed Have completed interviews. Ralph Vacchiano from SportsNet New York Recently it was estimated that Darnold could return worth on the order of a “second round pick plus perhaps another mid to late round” should the Jets actually decide to match him with potential contenders like the Bears, Panthers, Broncos, 49ers , Patriots and Washington. Darnold, who turns 24 this off-season, is leaving the third year of a pedestrian with just 2,208 yards and nine touchdowns versus 11 interceptions in 12 appearances. He was noticeably more productive in a similar game span in 2019 with 3,024 passes and a 19:13 TD: INT in 13 competitions.

Past fantasy prospects
Darnold, who took third place overall in last year’s draft, got into an ugly situation with the jets and provided legitimate grounds for optimism until the end of the year. His latest statistic wasn’t much to see and he only won four of his 13 starts, but a strong bond with Robby Anderson, who was deeply threatened, sparked an impressive three-week stretch in December. The Jets also had a surprisingly effective season from rookie tight-end Chris Herndon, who spent the off-season bucking Le’Veon Bell and slot receiver Jamison Crowder. With Anderson and Quincy Enunwa also returning, Darnold is in a much better position for his second NFL campaign. The offensive line is a little less encouraging, but a deal with security guard Kelechi Osemele gives at least hope of a modest improvement. Better blocking would go a long way considering Darnold lived up to his aggressive reputation by finishing 11th as a rookie on the average target depth (9.0). He’s not a dink-and-dunk game manager, but while he has the ability to move around and open up his receivers, Darnold doesn’t possess the kind of evasive maneuver that would allow him to pass behind a wobbly line as a downfield passer thrive. Of course, under the new coach Adam Gase, who favored the short passing game in Miami, he could be forced to safe, high-percentage throws.
Darnold was considered a # 1 overall pick in April, but when he dropped to third the Jets were delighted to pick him up with the hope that he could emerge as a franchise savior. Though the Jets re-signed their main starter (Josh McCown) from 2017 and brought in another seasoned caller to the free agency in Teddy Bridgewater, Darnold was given the opportunity to fight for the top job at training camp and quickly made a positive impression in practices and exhibition games. The Jets haven’t officially announced their plans for Week 1 yet, but the team’s decision to trade Bridgewater for the Saints on Aug 29, likely opens the door for Darnold to kick off the season as the team’s starter. At 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, Darnold brings the ideal size into the position along with a strong arm and good range of motion. He can improvise to extend games and throw accurately on the run, but there are two reasons for him: his handling and his ball safety. Some scouts believe that Darnold is likely speed enough to overcome the extra release time caused by the delivery, but he needs to improve his decision-making to address the latter issue. During his senior year at USC, Darnold was responsible for 22 sales, including nine lost fumbles.
