ANALYSIS
Mara also said he hopes Barkley is a “giant for life,” adding that he is completely confident that the receding star will return to full health. According to Kevin Patra from NFL.comDave Gettleman, general manager, said earlier this month that Barkley’s injuries made it difficult for the team to decide whether to take his fifth year option, a decision that will have to be made this spring. Barkley has undeniably been held back by an injury since winning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2018. In 2020, he had 19 carry for just 34 yards in two competitions before tearing his right ACL. All of the recent news about Barkley’s recovery process has been at least positive, so it’s hard to imagine New York just letting him go after 2021. It’s also worth noting, however, that under the new CBA, all options are fully guaranteed for the fifth year upon exercise, which could lead the giants to be more cautious in their trades after spending large amounts of money on free hand.

Past fantasy prospects

While the debate still rages over whether it’s ever worth running back with a top 5 draft pick in the modern NFL, Barkley could hardly have done more to stand up for his position. The second pick in 2018 was just the third rookie to dwarf 2,000 scrimmage yards (along with Eric Dickerson and Edgerrin James) while breaking Reggie Bush’s rookie record for catches with a rewind. In fact, Barkley’s 91 catches tied the Odell Beckham Jr. franchise record from a freshman, not to mention all of the other Giants records he’s set. His unreal mix of power, evasiveness, and wheels (Barkley recorded the third fastest speed of any rushing TD of 2018 at 21.91 mph) makes him the biggest big play threat in the league. His seven runs of more than 40 yards were the most since Adrian Peterson had eight in 2012, and Barkley and Randy Moss are the only players in NFL history to have five TDs of more than 50 yards in their debut campaigns. Barkley has seen more stacked fronts this season as the team’s quarterback game potentially bottomed out (he only struggled 23 percent of his transfers with eight man fronts last season), but an improved offensive line will help reduce the impact to mitigate, and the Giants still had a decent receiving corps even without Beckham. The bottom line is simple: in terms of its production floor and ceiling, Barkley cannot be touched.

Barkley is the second choice in the 2018 design and follows in the footsteps of Ezekiel Elliott and Leonard Fournette. Barkley has the skills to live up to that bill as his stellar career at Penn State has been interrupted by frequent appearances on highlight roles. Barkley’s speed – 4.440 in the combine – and top-notch evasiveness and agility make it extremely difficult for the defenders once he’s found open property. At 6-0, 233, Barkley is a burden to be brought down and his strong lower body allows him to gain many yards after contact, although he sometimes struggled to run between tackles. He’s also worked hard to transform himself into a three-down-back who can help as a receiver and pass guard, which the Giants had to prioritize given their aging quarterback and shaky offensive line. The team redesigned their line in the off-season by signing Nate Solder and Patrick Omameh as free agents and selecting Will Hernandez in the second round, so Barkley should be able to use his moves to hit two Avoid meters behind the border instead of two meters behind it. Expect him to see a huge workload as the new centerpiece of the Giants offensive.
