Seattle Mariners C Jose Godoy becomes 20,000th player to make MLB debut

SAN DIEGO – There were large numbers in Major League Baseball during the San Diego PadresWin 16-1 blowout over Seattle, and it had nothing to do with runs.

The list of great players began in 1871 and goes from A to Z – there has never been a player whose last name began with X, although there have been several whose first names began this way, including the Red Sox star Xander Bogaerts.

First in the alphabetical table is pitcher David Aardsma, who came out on top ahead of Hank Aaron when he started for San Francisco in 2004. Aardsma’s last season was 2015 – that was the same year that the last player on the list, pitcher Tony Zych, made his Mariners debut.

Of the total of 20,000 players, 266 have reached the Hall of Fame. Walter Alston played two innings in his only game for the Cardinals in 1936, struck in his lone stroke and made a mistake on first base – and later reached Cooperstown as the longtime manager of the Dodgers.
