The Seattle Mariners They are expected to call their top prospect Jarred Kelenic on Thursday, sources familiar with the situation shared with ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Number 6 in the 2018 amateur draft, Kelenic is number 3 in baseball, according to ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel.
While things may change, there are plans to promote Kelenic, an outfielder, for the first game of Seattle’s home series against the Cleveland Indians.
21-year-old Kelenic had to take a break at the beginning of spring training because of a tense adductor muscle in his left knee. He beats 9 against 20 with 2 home runs, 6 RBIs, 6 runs scored and 2 stolen bases in five games with Tacoma Rainiers, Seattle’s Triple A partner.
End of February Kelenic said his tenure was rigged by the Mariners based on comments from former team president and CEO Kevin Mather that drew the wrath of the MLBPA. Among several controversial comments in an online video that led to his resignationMather leaked information about contract negotiations with Kelenic to a Rotary club in Bellevue, Washington, on February 5. In the video, Mather said that neither Kelenic nor pitcher Logan Gilbert would be at the Major League Club on opening day to keep the club in control any longer.
After Mather posted his comments, Kelenic and one of his agents told USA Today it was “crystal clear” that the Mariners’ decision not to call him the majors in 2020 was based on service after his rejection of a guaranteed contract in 2019 .
Jerry Dipoto, general manager of Mariners, apologized personally to Kelenic at the time, but denied that the team was manipulating Kelenic’s service time.
“I’m not sure how you interpret a tenure manipulation with a 21-year-old player who was playing Play on A-Ball and haven’t made 800 record appearances as a professional player, “Dipoto told reporters in February.” That would be an unprecedented run in the major leagues that has not taken place in three decades.
“While Jarred is an extremely talented player, we want to make sure that he has ticked the boxes in development as it is not only for the good of the Mariners but also for Jarred Kelenic to make sure of that.” has been fully developed. “
