DALLAS (AP) – Joe Pavelski scored his ninth power play goal in the NHL, and the Dallas Stars scored two goals in the opening phase for the first time this season Columbus Blue Jackets 5-0 on Saturday night for the second win in the last 12 games.
“We wanted to get a win, but we could get it now,” said Pavelski.
Stars rookie goalie Jake Oettinger made 21 saves in his first career shutout and came in his seventh start.
The 36-year-old Pavelski scored 45 seconds later Jason Dickinson tucked a loose puck under the Blue Jackets goalkeeper’s left leg Joonas Korpisalo.
Columbus coach John Tortorella challenged the original goal, claiming the goalkeeper would intervene. But Dickinson’s score remained after the replay challenge was denied, resulting in a game penalty delay that gave the stars a man-made advantage.
“In my eyes it is not a question that should be recalled. I am aware of the tape. I look at the call. I’ll watch the video, ”said Tortorella. “If you want to tell me the pad wasn’t pushed in and I was told there was a game on the puck and so it’s a good target, I just don’t even understand that. The puck is there, but the pad is pushed in and the puck goes in behind it. ”

Dallas (7-8-4) dropped their last four games. Before the Stars scored two goals in the third phase of a 3-2 loss to Columbus on Thursday, they were goalless for 189 minutes and 46 seconds. They had only won one more time since a 6-3 win in Columbus on February 2nd.
That nine-and-a-half-period without a goal included consecutive sidelights against Tampa Bay in the first two games of the season against the team the Stars lost in the Stanley Cup final last September.
“Every game is the same, we want to have a great start,” said Stars coach Rick Bowness. “But tonight … we tried to extend our third period from the last game and we did it.”
The Blue Jackets (10-11-5) missed a chance for their first winning streak in three games this year.

Korpisalo stopped 18 shots before being drawn in the middle of the third period after Roope Hintz scored the 4-0 with a little skilful skating and a backhand. Radek Faksa added a shorthanded goal in the last minute Vehvilainen wine.
Hintz was the only multi-point player as he had primary support for the early power play goal. Pavelski’s eleventh overall goal came into play at 3:09, making it the second player in franchise history to score nine power play goals in the first 19 games (Dino Ciccarelli had 13 in 1986-87).
Stars defenders Miro Heiskanen He scored the second game in a row after being empty in his first 17. He collected a puck that ricocheted off the side boards in the second period and shot the 3-0 with a wrist from about 37 feet away.
CHILDREN ZERO
At 22 years and 78 days, Oettinger was the youngest goalkeeper in Dallas Stars history to suffer a shutout and the second youngest in Stars / Minnesota North Stars history. Pete Lopresti had two failures in 1975 before his 22nd birthday.
“It’s really something special,” said Oettinger. “My brother and sister are here tonight so I was really glad they were here and saw this live.”
Pavelski said Oettinger was “just solid” and had looked confident from the start of the season.
HOT UNDER THE COLLAR
As the game progressed, it became difficult between the teams and the players shuffled through several interruptions in the game. There were no penalties for such discretion up to the captain of Stars Jamie Benn and Columbus Center Max Domi Both received 10-minute penalties for misconduct in the middle of the third period.
INJURY HINTZ
Hintz is dealing with an ongoing lower body problem and has only played for the third time in six games. Even after going through morning skate, Bowness gave Hintz a game-time decision – and said it will likely be the case throughout the season. Hintz didn’t play on Thursday after going through morning skate. In the second half on Saturday, Hintz hit the boards hard after a trip penalty Gabriel Carlsson.
“When he went down I winced. That hurt, ”said Bowness. “He’s such an important part of our team. When he goes down I hold my breath and hope he gets up. ”
