How does Sterling Shepard measure it compared to other wide receivers?

This section compares its draft workout metrics with those of players in the same position. The bar represents the player’s percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway, the player falls in the 50th percentile for that metric and would be considered average.

Shepard had his worst season as a professional in 2019, partly because it was marred by two concussions, which put him at greater risk. However, his per game averages in 10 games were disappointing too – a career lows of 10.1 YPC and 6.9 YPT. However, the 40th overall pick in 2016 is said to be a prominent part of the offense, sharing the slot with Golden Tate and competing outside Darius Slayton. At 5-10, 201 Shepard is strong, fast, and above average speed (4.48 40), but he’s not a big play guy (only six catches for 40-plus in his entire career and none in the last year) . Two tailwinds for the entire Giants passing game are a risk-taking young quarterback who can use his legs to buy time to throw downfield and a subpar defense that is likely to make for useful game flow. Shepard is a competent and reliable player when he’s healthy, so he should be involved, but the exact pecking order between Shepard, Tate and Slayton has yet to be established in Jason Garrett’s offensive.

Shepard’s situation might have been better if the Giants hadn’t acquired his virtual clone. With Odell Beckham Jr. gone, it looked like Shepard might be the team’s undisputed top target, but the Giants quickly signed a four-year deal to Golden Tate and signed him as co-no. 1, probably in the slot. Tate’s addition was supposed to force Shepard out, where he only got 30 percent of his snaps in 2018. Similar to the 5-10, 197 pound Tate, Shepard is 5-10, 201, and both are above average speeds (4.48 40 for Shepard). The 25-year-old averaged a modest 8.1 YPT and a similar average 13.2 YPC last year. He has made three catches for over 40 yards, but lacks the size or low speed to be a normal field stretcher. Shepard saw a lot of work in the red zone – 19 goals within the 20 and eight within the 10 – four of which he converted for points. The Giants are high on Shepard – they gave him a four year contract extension and $ 41 million, much like they paid Tate. The problems are a weak quarterback game by Eli Manning and a crowded reception corps in the short sections of the field – alongside Tate and Shepard, both tight end Evan Engram and running back Saquon Barkley watching many targets in similar locations. Look for Shepard to run more intermediate routes and possibly increase his efficiency, provided Manning can still make those throws.

The Giants lost their top three wideouts, Shepard, Brandon Marshall, and Odell Beckham, in week 5 last year, and Shepard was the only one to make it back – before missing weeks 11 and 12 with migraines. Even so, Shepard made three 130-yard games in 11 competitions, averaging a respectable 8.7 YPT, despite playing in one of the league’s worst passing injuries. Shepard wasn’t doing much near the goal line – he couldn’t score in the 10 for seven goals or in the 20 for 11 goals. Accordingly, he only scored twice a year, despite missing Beckham for most of the season. At 5-10, 194 Shepard is on the small side, but he has a vertical jump of 41 inches and a large catch radius for his size. He also has good speed (4.48 40) and is a smooth distance runner with good hands. As such, he’s a steady addition to the more explosive Beckham and the bigger, faster Evan Engram. Just don’t expect too many big plays or touchdowns, especially since the hugely promising Saquon Barkley has also been added to the mix.

Shepard’s rookie season was mixed. On the one hand, he caught 65 passes and scored eight goals. On the flip side, he seldom made a big game – six catches from over 20 yards, none for 40 – and averaged a meager 6.5 YPT (36th among the league’s 41 100-target WRs). At 5-10, 194 Shepard is on the small side, but he has a vertical jump of 41 inches and a large catch radius for his size. He also has good speed (4.48 40) and is strong and athletic for his size. Playing against Odell Beckham Jr. crowns his advantage, and things are likely to get worse this year with Brandon Marshall on the team. Expect Shepard to operate out of the slot and drive shorter routes while Beckham expands the field and Marshall sucks the work in the red zone. As such, Shepard is more sustainable in PPR this year, but even that requires Eli Manning to play better than he has done in previous seasons.

Shepard, a second round pick, ended up in an ideal spot, even more so when Victor Cruz is not healthy. The game against Odell Beckham Jr. makes for an easy transition where Shepard will never be the focus of defense. In addition, the Giants do not target Beckham with an excessive percentage of their attempts. The Giants were also one of the league’s more passable teams, although that could change if their defenses get closer to league average in preventing points. At 5-10, 194 Shepard is on the small side but plays bigger for his size because of his 41-inch vertical and large catch radius. It also has good speed (4.48 40) and is strong and athletic for a small receiver. He has advantages, and even if Cruz returned to his 2013 level, Shepard would be instantly the No. 3 receiver on a team without a good tight end.
