The Iftar Box at Atlanta Halal Meat & Food Is Full of Family Favorites

The way Muslims break their fast during Ramadan varies by family, community, and culture. However, one thing is common for restaurants around the world to offer set take-away meals called iftar boxes: neatly packaged dinners for people who fast to pick them up and take home and eat for iftar, the post-fasting dinner.

“Ramadan is a time to reflect,” says Chef Farhan Momin. “It’s a very spiritual month and it’s very humble.” Farhan is running Atlanta Halal Meat & Food, a butcher shop and takeaway, with his father Ahmed and this year for Ramadan they have created an iftar box of groceries inspired by the dishes their Indian-American family enjoys together. Available for on-site pickup, the box contains a rotating selection of Iftar dishes, including the sandwich Farhan invented while reheating food his parents left at his dormitory and the Medjool dates that the Momins traditionally use to break every night.

The data

“Dates are a blessing from God,” says Ahmed. “Breaking your fast with one will give you energy for the evening prayers and the feast that follows,” Farhan adds. This box contains Medjool dates, which Farhan loves for their rich taste and high sugar and vitamin content, as well as seasonal fruits.

The Nimbu Pani

Whenever Farhan tells people that he fasts during the Muslim holy month, he gets the same follow-up question: “Not even water?” Drinking is forbidden until the iftar, so the momins wanted to offer something that was easy on the stomach after a day without food or drinks. Give her nimbu pain (upper left corner), a lemonade flavored with black salt and cumin.

The samosa

Samosas are a must at iftar parties that Farhan has attended. A large samosa filled with potatoes and peas and served with coriander and tamarind chutneys is in the box.

The Nihari sandwich

Once in college, Farhan left some nihari – a slow-cooked meat dish – on the stove for too long and shredded it. So he took some bread “and treated it like a sloppy Joe,” he said. “It was delicious.” Now on the Atlanta Halal Meat & Food menu, it has become a best seller. So it is of course part of the iftar box.

The Kheer

“For us, Kheer is just the epitome of Ramadan,” says Farhan. This cardamom rice pudding (top right) is served at least a few times for dessert in the mom’s household during Ramadan. “After fasting, you want something sweeter, and kheer is very good because it is filling and cooling,” explains Ahmed.

The falooda

Take a scoop of kulfi; Add rose syrup, milk, agar-agar jellies, vermicelli, and basil seeds; and you get this falooda (lower right corner). “It’s a delicious, high-calorie way to round off your fast,” says Farhan of the dessert.
