Trevor Lawrence selected No. 1 by Jacksonville Jaguars in NFL draft

What had been expected for months finally became official on Thursday night when the Jacksonville Jaguars used the # 1 overall selection in the 2021 NFL draft on Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

The 21 year old Lawrence was the highest rated quarterback in this year’s draft class, a strong group that includes BYU’s Zach Wilson, Ohio State’s Justin Fields, North Dakota State’s Trey Lance, and Alabama’s Mac Jones.

In Lawrence, the Jaguars, who own four of the first 45 selections in this year’s draft, receive a cornerstone for new head coach Urban Meyer. This is the third time since 2011 that the Jaguars have drafted a quarterback in the first round. Jacksonville certainly hopes Lawrence is the long-term solution to the position that Blake Bortles (# 3 overall in 2014) and Blaine Gabbert (# 10 overall in 2011) weren’t.

Lawrence becomes the first Clemson player to be selected with the top picks in the NFL draft. Before Lawrence, the tallest Clemson player ever picked was fourth in the standings, four times (Banks McFadden in 1940, Gaines Adams in 2007, Sammy Watkins in 2014, and Clelin Ferrell in 2019). Lawrence is also the third Clemson quarterback selected in the first round, along with Deshaun Watson (# 12 overall in 2017) and Steve Fuller (# 23 overall in 1979).

In three seasons at Clemson, Lawrence overtook 10,098 yards and 90 touchdowns. As a starter, he took the lead 34-2, with both defeats in the College Football Playoff. On January 7, 2019, Lawrence helped Clemson win the national championship a resounding 44-17 win over Alabama.

Lawrence chose not to participate in the Cleveland design, but rather to watch the event with friends and family.
