Mark Williams scored two centuries as he struggled to lead multiple world champion John Higgins 5-3 in a high quality start into an exciting second round game at the Crucible.

The 45-year-old Scot Higgins took a 3-1 lead thanks to three and a half centuries.

But the Welshman, 46, scored his second ton and more breaks of 91 and 70 helped him win four frames in a row.

Meanwhile third seed Neil Robertson retained its two-frame lead Jack Lisowski, go from 5-3 to 9-7.

Four-time Crucible champion Higgins looked in commanding shape as he won the initiative during breaks 58, 90 and 75 in a competition that is a replay of the 2018 epic final he lost to Williams.

But the three-time winner has his opponent frozen in the session after the break. In the second half of the session, Higgins scored just 52 total points.

They end up playing on Saturday with morning and evening sessions.

The Robertson-Lisowski match was just as convincing and probably even exceeded the standard that separated the two veterans on table one.

Fans were given a break of at least 50 in each of the eight shared frames.

Bristol’s Lisowski, number 14 in the world, took breaks from 91, 80 and 73 as he brought the score to 6-6.

However, the Australian, the 2010 world champion, responded with 137, 69 and 113 points, taking a lead of 9-6.

The fourth century of the game, Lisowski’s first, narrowed the gap to 9-7 before the final session on Saturday morning.

In the other morning game, number six was in the world Kyren Wilson and world number 11 Barry Hawkins Target level 4-4 at the end of the opening session of their second round meeting.

They will play the second session on Friday evening before finishing their game on Saturday afternoon.
