World Triathlon Series: Alex Yee finishes fourth in Yokohama

Alex Yee hopes to secure his spot on the Team GB Olympic roster

Alex Yee finished fourth in the opening round of the 2021 World Triathlon Series in Yokohama to increase his chances of making the GB squad.

The Norwegian Kristian Blummenfelt won gold in Japan ahead of the Belgian Jelle Geens and the American Morgan Pearson.

In the women’s category, Britons Sophie Caldwell and Non Stanford took sixth and seventh place respectively.

American Taylor Knibb won gold to secure her place on the US squad for the Tokyo Games.

Since the double Olympics and world champion Alistair Brownlee missed the event due to an injury and currently only one place is available next to Jonny in the Olympic squad, Yee is currently second in the British overall standings.

Alistair, Great Britain’s most successful triathlete, rose to Ironman distance after defending his Olympic title in Rio and has also struggled with injury problems in recent years.

He’s still battling for a spot on the squad, however, and hopes to take advantage of the next World Series event in Leeds on June 5th and 6th to secure a trip to a fourth game.
